Visas & Entry to Nigeria
All international delegates traveling to Nigeria must ensure they hold a valid passport with a minimum of six months of validity remaining and at least two blank pages.
-
Standard Embassy Applications: Please consult the official website of the Embassy or High Commission of Nigeria in your respective country for specific local guidelines.
-
e-Visa: Nigeria offers an official e-Visa (Short Visit Visa) platform online https://evisa.immigration.gov.ng/ . Most short-stay e-Visas are processed electronically within 48 hours to 3 working days of successful online submission and payment.
-
Letters of Introduction: If your visa application requires an official letter of invitation/introduction from the conference hosts, please reach out to us at mbjohnson@unilag.edu.ng and our team will gladly assist you.
Accommodation
We have options to suit different preferences and budgets. We highly recommend booking early as spaces fill up quickly.
-
On-Campus: The University of Lagos Guest House offers convenient, comfortable lodging directly on the university grounds, minimizing daily transit. You can make bookings here https://unilagguesthouses.com/.
-
Off-Campus Neighborhoods: For delegates preferring to stay outside the university campus, excellent hotel options are available in nearby residential and commercial hubs:
-
Yaba & Ebute Metta: Vibrant local neighborhoods situated very close to the campus, offering easy commute times (approximately 10-20 minutes from campus depending on traffic).
-
Ikeja: Located further mainland, Ikeja features a wide selection of international business hotels and premium amenities (approximately 30–45 minutes from campus depending on traffic).
Moving Around
Lagos is a dynamic, fast-moving city. To navigate safely and comfortably, we recommend the following transit options:
-
Ride-Hailing Apps: Uber and Bolt operate extensively throughout Lagos and are the safest, most predictable way for international visitors to move between hotels and the venue.
-
Airport Transfers: We advise coordinating airport pickups directly through your chosen hotel or arranging a verified ride-hailing service immediately upon landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS). Avoid using unregistered street taxis.
Security & Safety Advisory
The safety of our delegates is our highest priority. While international travel advisories highlight general caution for travel to Nigeria, Lagos, particularly major commercial, residential, and academic areas like the University of Lagos campus. frequently hosts international events safely. We advise all visitors to observe standard urban safety precautions:
-
Stay Alert in Public Space: Maintain awareness of your surroundings, keep a low profile, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash or wearing conspicuously expensive jewelry.
-
Night Travel: We strongly recommend avoiding unnecessary road travel or walking alone after dark. Stick to well-lit, busy areas and utilize trusted transport services if you must travel at night.
-
Secure Accommodations: Ensure you stay in vetted accommodations (such as the University of Lagos Guest House or recommended hotels in Yaba, Ebute Metta, and Ikeja) that feature dedicated 24/7 security personnel and access controls.
-
Emergency Contacts: Keep a digital and physical copy of your passport data page, your visa approval, and the conference emergency contact numbers with you at all times.
Additional Logistics Checklist
Here are a few standard, critical logistical details for international conferences in Lagos that you should consider adding to the page:
-
Health Regulations (Yellow Fever): A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (Yellow Card) is a mandatory entry requirement for Nigeria. Proof of vaccination is required at border control and should be administered at least 10 days before your departure.
-
Currency & Payments: The local currency is the Nigerian Naira (₦). While card payments (Visa/Mastercard) are common in major hotels and supermarkets, local transport and smaller vendors rely on cash or online bank transfers. International cards may sometimes face bank restrictions, so it is advisable to notify your bank before travel and carry cash to exchange at the airport or hotel.
-
Connectivity (SIM Cards): Local SIM cards (MTN, Airtel) can be purchased and registered directly at the airport arrivals terminal or local stores. This is highly recommended for using ride-hailing apps on the go.
-
Weather & Attire: August falls within the traditional "August Break" of the rainy season in Lagos—expect mild temperatures but pack an umbrella or light rain jacket just in case. Conference attire is typically business casual or cultural attire.
